Q.4: What were the problems that Ashoka wanted to solve by introducing dhamma ?

Ans: The problems that Ashoka wanted to solve by introducing dhamma were:

  1. People followed different religions and that sometimes led to conflicts.
  2. Sacrifice of animals.
  3. Ill treatment of slaves and servants.
  4. Quarrels in families and amongst neighbours.

Q.5: What were the means adopted by Ashoka to spread the message of dhamma ?

Ans: Ashoka appointed officials, known as dhamma mahamatta who went from place to place teaching about dhamma. He also got his messages inscribed on rocks and pillars, instructing his officials to read his message to those who could not read it themselves. He also sent messengers to spread ideas about dhamma to other lands, such as Egypt, Syria, Greece and Sri Lanka.

Q.6: Why do you think the slaves and servants were ill-treated ? Do you think the orders of the emperors would have improved their conditions ? Give reasons for your answers.

Ans: I think that slaves and servants were ill-treated because they were considered as the last group of the varna system. ( Reason: In previous chapters, we have read about how people belonging to Shudra were ill-treated )

Yes, the orders of the emperor would have improved their conditions. ( Reason: As we have read in this chapter that Ashoka had introduced dhamma to solve many problems one of which was the ill-treatment of slaves and servants )

Q.7: Write a short paragraph explaining to Roshan why the lions are shown on our currency notes. List at least one other object on which you see them.

Ans: The lions of Sarnath are the National Emblem of our country. That’s why those notes are shown on our currency notes. You can also find the lions on the coins.

Q.8: Suppose you had the power to inscribe your orders, what four commands would you like to issue ?

Ans: If I had the power to inscribe my orders, the four commands that I would like to issue are:

  1. Stop animal sacrifice
  2. Respect all religions
  3. Be helpful and kind to all living beings
  4. Stop ill-treatment of slaves and servants
