Important Notes:

  • India lies entirely in the Northern hemisphere.
  • The main land of India lies between latitudes 8 degree 4′ N and 37 degree 6′ N and longitudes 68 degree 7′ E and 97 degree 25′ E.
  • The Tropic of Cancer (23 degree 30′ N) divides the country into almost two equal parts.
  • The land mass of India has an area of 3.28 million sq. km.
  • Its area accounts for 2.4 per cent of total geographical area of the world.
  • It has the land boundary of about 15,200 km and the total length of the coastline of the mainland including Andaman and Nicobar and Lakshadweep is 7516.6 km.
  • There is a time difference of two hours from Gujarat to Arunachal Pradesh.
  • The Standard Meridian of India (82 degree 30′ E) which passes through Mirzapur is considered as the Standard Time of India.
  • India shares its land boundaries with Pakistan and Afghanistan in the northwest, Tibet, Nepal and Bhutan in the north and Myanmar and Bangladesh in the east.
  • India has two neighbouring island countries namely Sri Lanka and Maldives.
  • Sri Lanka is separated from India by a narrow channel of sea formed by Palk Strait and Gulf of Mannar.
