  • People who lived in the subcontinent as early as two million years ago were described as hunters-gatherers.
  • Why hunters and gatherers never stayed at one place ?
    • If they had stayed at one place, then they would have eaten all the food.
    • They move in search of their prey.
    • Plants and trees bear fruits in certain seasons only.
    • They wander in search of water.
  • People made tools of stones, bones and wood.
  • Bhimbetka is located at present-day Madhya Pradesh.
  • Bhimbetka is an old site with caves and rock shelters.
  • Some of the best cave paintings can be found in Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh.
  • Cave paintings show wild animals, drawn with accuracy and skill.
  • Sites are the places where the remains of things like tools, pots, utensils, etc. were found.
  • Traces of ashes have been found in Kurnool caves.
  • The uses of fire : source of light, to roast meat and to scare away animals.
  • “Palaeolithic” comes from two Greek words “palaeo” meaning old and “lithos” meaning stone.
  • Palaeolithic period extends from 2 million years ago to about 12,000 years ago.
  • The whole Palaeolithic period is divided into three parts : Lower, Middle and Upper Palaeolithic.
  • The period beginning about 12,000 years ago till about 10,000 years ago is known as “Mesolithic”. During these years, we find many environmental changes.
  • Stone tools found during Mesolithic period are known as “microliths”.
  • The period from about 10,000 years ago is known as “Neolithic”.
  • Around 12,000 years ago, the climate of the world shifted to warm conditions which led to the increase in numbers of animals like deer, antelope, goat, sheep, etc.
  • Domestication began about 12,000 years ago.
  • The earliest domesticated animals include sheep and goat.
  • The earliest domesticated plants include wheat and barley.
