Important Defines:

  • Rotation is the movement of earth on its own axis.
  • The movement of earth around Sun on a fixed path is known as revolution.
  • The plane formed by the orbit is known as orbital plane.
  • The circle that divides the day from night on the globe is called the circle of illumination.
  • The period of rotation is known as earthday.
  • On 21st June, the Northern Hemisphere is tilted towards the sun. The rays of the sun directly falls on Tropic of Cancer. As a result, the days are longer than the nights. On this same day, conditions are reversed in Southern Hemisphere. There nights are longer than the days. This position of earth is called the Summer Solstice.
  • On 22nd December, the Southern Hemisphere is tilted towards the sun. The rays of the sun directly falls on Tropic of Capricorn. As a result, the days are longer than the nights. On this same day, the conditions are reversed in Northern Hemisphere. There nights are longer than days. This position of earth is called the Winter Solstice.
  • On 21st March and 23rd September, direct rays of the sun fall on the equator. At this position, neither of the poles is tilted towards the Sun, so the whole earth experiences equal days and equal nights. This is called an equinox.
