Q.1: Why did Swami Haridas say Tansen was ‘talented’ ?

Ans: Swami Haridas heard Tansen’s imitation of a tiger’s roar. On hearing that, Swami Haridas knew that Tansen was talented.

Q.2: Why did Akbar ask Tansen to join his court ?

Ans: Tansen sang before Akbar. Being impressed by that performance, Akbar asked Tansen to join his court.

Q.3: How do we know that Akbar was fond of Tansen ? Give two reasons.

Ans: We know that Akbar was fond of Tansen because of the following reasons:

i. Akbar would call upon Tansen to sing at any time during the day or night.

ii. Sometimes, Akbar would would just walk to Tansen’s house to hear him practise.

Q.4: What did the other courtiers feel about Tansen ?

Ans: The other courtiers were quite jealous of Tansen as he was often showered with gifts from Akbar. They felt that they could not rest until Tansen is ruined.

Q.5: i) What happens if Raga Deepak is sung properly ?

ii) Why did Tansen’s enemies want him to sing the Raga ?

Ans: i. If the Raga Deepak is sung properly, it makes the air so hot that the singer is burnt to ashes.

ii. Tansen’s enemies wanted him to sing the Raga because they knew that on singing this Raga properly, Tansen would die and they would be rid of him.

Q.6: Why did Tansen agree to sing Raga Deepak ?

Ans: When the other courtiers went to Akbar and told him that they wanted Tansen to sing Raga Deepak. Akbar told Tansen to sing Raga Deepak and as Tansen was afraid of disobeying the Emperor’s order, he agreed to sing Raga Deepak.

Q.7: i) What steps did he take to save himself ?

ii) Did his plan work ? How ?

Ans: i. He planned that his daughter Saraswati and her friend Rupvati will start singing Raga Megh when the lamps start burning, as this Raga would bring rain.

ii. Yes, his plan worked successfully. When he started singing Raga Deepak, the air became warm. Soon people in audience were bathed in perspiration. The leaves on the trees dried up and fell to the ground. Birds fell dead because of the heat and water in the river began to boil. Flames shot up out of nowhere and lamps started burning. At that time, Saraswati and Rupvati started singing Raga Megh. The sky clouded over and the rain came down. Thus, Tansen was saved.
